The Dale Farm illegal gypsy camp eviction is drawing near and there are serious fears that there may be deaths and injuries at the Crays Hill site should the travellers riot and attack the police and bailiffs who will be evicting the travellers on a date which will be confirmed over the coming days.
19/10/2011 – The eviction is underway, the time has come and it is over. Faced with overwhelming force the eviction seems certain. Reports of Taser being fired on those posing a serious threat to the police who came under attack upon entering the site are common, though it looks like it is going to be an effective operation, and the level of violence anticipated thankfully did not materialise and there are few casualties and no reported deaths.
26/09/2011 – The travellers have won a further victory at the high court, the Judge has described to enforcement notices as being invalid. It may be a further few days of legal argument and deliberation before the situation becomes clearer. Uncertainty over what is legal and what is not. Costs are mounting, and the legality of the proposed evictions is seeming more doubtful. More details to follow
23/09/2011 – The travellers have sensationally (though not surprisingly) won more time after a hearing at the High Court and some kind of decision or guidance is expected on Monday 26/09/2011.
19/09/2011 – A the last minute a high court judge granted an injunction to stop eviction proceedings, at least until a hearing on Friday. The proposed eviction will restart on the 23rd-24th September, depending on the outcome of the hearing on Friday.
18/09/2011 – Eviction on for tomorrow, the site does appear to be old brownfield land according to evidence, and technically it could be defined as ethnic cleansing according to UN representatives. There are still very serious issues as to health and safety during the eviction, and the ethics of the lawful decisions that have been made.
Many people want the eviction, though the travellers have a number of sound legal arguments as to why it should not happen.
Many Basildon locals believe that £18 million is a high price to pay, though many support the eviction, though no official surveys have been done. The eviction may be ongoing for some weeks, estimates suggest the operation will take up to six weeks or more.
17/09/2001 – Two days to go, the siege is being readied and nothing will be allowed into the camp at any time now. The terms of the eviction allow for the siege to begin before the 19th and operation at this time are ongoing. There have been reports of small numbers of people leaving the site.
The most interesting bit of news at this time is that the site may in-fact be a brownfield site after all. As it was a scrapyard this makes it brownfield, and according to reports the council actually employed contractors to hard-core the site and dump vehicles and other items on the site back in the 60s/70s, and the site was a scrapyard since the 70s. There is a serious question now over the ethics of the eviction and how it might be portrayed by the world, after former UN representative described it as illegal and immoral.
05/09/2011 – It has been announced that the Dale Farm eviction date will be the 19th September 2011 (2 weeks).
Basildon council has said that it plans to evict all Travellers on greenbelt land on the 19 September and is urging them to make homelessness applications, and be re-homed.

At the camp there is much tension and resentment, and the residents are threatening to resist at all costs. There has been reports that militias have been forming and residents have been obtaining weapons and other supplies from the nearby B and Q, B&Q Supercentre in Pipps Hill Retail Park, Basildon. Protesters and anarchists have set up something called Camp Constant which is where they plan to make their final stand in protest at the evictions.
02/09/2011 – The UN advise the UK government to delay the evictions, and offer suitable land to the travellers elsewhere. The UK government rejects this request and advises that the situation which has been going on for 10 years will be resolved within weeks.
Also in the news the police are suggesting that a siege will take place, and the travellers will be starved out, or something to that effect. It appears that police and bailiffs are reluctant to get physical with the eviction. There are strong hints now of this situation becoming an expensive farce.
One elderly Basildon resident has said that they had sold out of pitchforks and axes, and other potential weapons, and that there had been a great deal of travellers in on pensioners day which is a Wednesday. The resident had become frightened after seeing travellers with axes walking out of the store, and thought there was a robbery going on, it turned out this was not the case.
06/09/2011 – Police and authorities have confirmed that they will lay siege to the camp, cutting off electricity and closing down nearby roads. Residents are vowing to break any siege.
This suggests that there may be active planning in resisting the police and bailiffs. Though there is every chance that a negotiated settlement may be reached.
When the Dale Farm eviction goes ahead it will be the biggest operation of its kind in Europe, and the Illegal part of Crays Hill travellers camp will be demolished. An Essex riot is a possibility as are deaths and injuries should any attacks take place on the police and bailiffs. The residents do have supporters. Thousands of travellers, students, anarchists, human rights campaigners, celebrities, and assorted odd balls are expected to rally to the defence of the gypsies. This REGULARLY UPDATED POST will follow the eviction of Irish Travellers from Dale Farm. The story has been going on for 10 years now and from today onwards an operation costing at least £10 million will start to evict around 600 people from an illegal travellers site called Dale Farm. The eviction will require a massive number of Police, bailiffs and other professionals. The idea seems to be to bulldoze and remove all dwellings that are illegal, dig up the illegal roads and return the site to green belt land. How people will be treated at Dale Farm when evicted is not being confirmed at this time, though it would be presumed anyone resisting will be arrested. It is believed that all reasonable force will have to be used.
People have built homes on land or have caravans on land which is green belt and there is no planning permission. The case has been through the courts and the eviction looks set to be going ahead. The residents and the media are awaiting details of the exact date when the operation to remove the travellers will take place.
It could be as soon as two weeks time, but it is happening. Last minute negotiations are ongoing, and it is thought that travellers are being offered as much as £30k per family to leave, on the condition that they all leave. This has so far been rejected by the travellers.
There has been talk that there will be fierce resistance to the eviction and much planning has taken place to ensure that there are minimal casualties during the potential conflict that will take place.
It has been reported that activists from Sweden, Italy, Belgium and France have arrived at the Dale Farm eviction site to set up a protest camp.
A number of Anarchists have descended on Dale farm, who appear willing to fight and have set up some defences. Barbed wire and suspect gas canisters have been spotted. It is thought that there may be a number of guns, knives (a certainty), and other weapons on the site, and police will have an armed team on standby at the evictions, and police will be armed with batons and Taser.
Police will have to make the decision on if they should go in armoured or not. If they wear their riot gear they will be safer, though they may choose not to.
There is a serious threat to safety as potentially thousands of travellers from outside the area have rallied in support of the residents and set up camp in support of residents. The operation may need as many as 5,000 police officers, and other security professionals are being recruited for the operation.
The land owners are certain that they will not move and have started building defences. They plan to build and set fire to key entry points to repel attack. It is a very tense situation and negotiations are ongoing. The travellers do own the land, but are not using it in line with the law. There have been calls for the children to be evacuated, though both police and residents will negotiate on this nearer the time.
It has been suggested that around two thousand people will be resisting the eviction, some peacefully, others have threatened to take up arms in defence of the residents. There is a serious risk of major violence death and regret. Everything is being done that can be done to avoid a forced eviction.
The legality is not really in question, the land has been built on illegally, that cannot be denied. There is of course much support for the gypsies.
The Bishop of Chelmsford Stephen Cottrell and Catholic Bishop of Brentwood Thomas McMahon along with famous actress Vanessa Redgrave recently visited the illegal travellers site in Essex, and met some of the 80 families who are under immediate threat of eviction by the local Basildon council.
Evictions from Dale Farm can begin, and the last recourse of the courts has been spent. The evictions are going ahead. The Dale farm evictions potentially could be very violent and there is a definite worry of injuries. The UN has even appealed for calm, which seems extreme.
Many in the Gypsy community are distressed and frightened and the community really does not want to be broken up. They have many supporters around the UK.
A test case at the High Court on Wednesday afternoon has failed to halt the evictions, and the evictions will be going ahead.
Basildon Council and the Department for Communities and Local Government are confident the evictions are legal and that negotiations are continuing to find a peaceful resolution to the volatile situation.
Planning for a multi-million pound policing operation to support the clearance began some time ago, and can be implemented at any time.

It is good to see differing points of view. The green belt is important, as it is designed to stop the the urban sprawl, and the more land we can save from development the better in my opinion. I personally love the countryside.
There have been numerous cases of travellers buying green belt land cheap (often land can be bought at £6,000 per acre or less) and then getting heavy machinery and making it into a mini village.
If everyone was allowed to do this we would have no countryside, and England would be a sad place to live.
I think it is important we crack down on things like this, though 10 years is a very long time to take over it.
I can understand why people want to live in caravans, it is a different lifestyle, and I would not criticise this.
You do not need to be moving all the time to be a traveller, and I can respect the culture.

I think we’re missing a few key points here people. Basildon Council have offered the travellers alternative accomodation which they have refused. Apparently, they don’t want to be split up. I’m sorry, but there are thousands of other people in this country, who are in far worse situations, who are law abiding, and are not offered housing as the travellers have been. There is somewhere for them to go.

I have never had problems with them, in fact most are nice and helpful peolpe. I probably have this opnion as I have been nothing but nice to them and therefore they have always been nice to me.

The fundamental principle is that these settlers have over the last 10 years ignored the law, disrespected the local community, wrecked and caused a local school to be closed down, made local residents leave the area due to intimidation and simply ignore the fact that they are not permitted to build on a spot of land. They disregard the fact that the land is not avialable to them, the same as they have disregarded the pain and suffering they cause the wrecked community surrounding them. This has gone on long enough. If they want to live somewhere as long as 10 years then they should do so through the channels that most other people have to. I have witnessed some of the residents of this site wheeling buggies into banks with 10s of 1000′s of £ under the kids bottoms, shouting and abusing staff that won’t open them accounts due to not having any documentation with them. I’ve lived in Basildon and believe me, some of the council estate (English) trash think more about who they’re going to have the next benefit raised kid with and where they’re going to get trashed on a Friday night, than getting rid of their kid’s headlice or raising that child NOT to terrorise the neighbours! I live like most people, earn my money, pay my taxes, i wanted to build an extension to my house, i went out and PAID for planning permission. These people, paid for the land, they had absolutely no intention of putting in for planning because they knew it would be turned down as it is on greenbelt. Please let us all have a decent debate and not be abusive to each other. A poem about gypsies is not very… helpful. People are going to be losing their homes, and suffering, even if they have themselves to blame. Try to understand their plight.
Potentially people could die during the eviction so we should all be wary of making jokes on it. It is a very serious situation. It should not come to violence and negotiation should be completed, and I am sure that a solution will be found.
The land used to be a scrapyard, and they are just going to be re-homed in the Basildon community and lose their little community. They live in caravans not houses, so maybe there is nearby land they could move to that is not greenbelt.
They have to be moved by law, and it is hard to see how that could not apply in this situation. Is it fair? that is a hard question. It does not matter what we think, if it is unfair to them, I think they have a right to protest.
They are travellers and they can all move together somewhere, which should be made available to them, hopefully they would do the decent thing and move.
They need some kind of land, though not free land, it should be paid for, and there is an argument that they should also be billed for the clear up of their illegal site, and restoring it to greenbelt.
I do not mind caravans, but permanent structures on greenbelt has to be bad.
They do not deserve to be treated humanely. They came here uninvited, illegally and spoilt and wrecked an entire community.

I am kind hearted to anyone or anything good and decent, but I’ve lived with this scum in my community for ten years.
They run around like a pack of wolves, and have ruined many a good evening in the local area of Wickford and Basildon. Ten pin bowling they took two lanes and spent the night with chests puffed out swearing and intimidating decent family folk with small children, same thing in pubs, petrol stations, Blockbusters, Tescos on the A127 etc etc… too many instances to list. They are very loud, often red headed and freckly, strong Irish accents and seem to take delight upsetting the general public by being rude, in your face , obnoxious, never giving way by foot or on the road, threatening violence and bad language at every turn. Fuck them. I’ve no time for them or their sort. Nuke them , hang them , shoot them I couldn’t care less…and bury every do gooder softy who cares about their human rights with them. Sorry but that’s the kind of hatred having them in your community for ten years brings…..
As a Crays Hill resident I have to say “Well Said”. The initial few who purchased the land and are on legal pitches were no problem at all and intregated into village life. However, the subsequent “residents” have caused havoc, mayhem and chaos. They intimidate, steal, swear etc at anyone who dares to stand in their way. My parents bought a small 4 room bungalow 45 years ago and have gradually built and rebuilt (all with planning permission I might add!)their property until they finally have the dream home that they want and quite frankly deserve. Both my parents (and myself) have worked all their lives and have never lived off benefits, when we didn’t have any money we went without and made do, we didn’t just walk into a shop and take something and then threaten anyone who challenged it. The legal battle has been going on for 10 years but the true problem has been going on for much, much longer and people fail to realise or accept this. My Dad is diabetic, asthmatic and has had 2 strokes but does anybody care about the effect this has had on him or any of the other young, elderly, ill or vunerable legal residents in Crays Hill – not a chance ! Please think about how you would all feel if you had lived in this situation before you start ranting about ethnic cleansing and people being Nazis.

They do not deserve your pity believe me. And they wouldn’t offer you an ounce of mercy if the tables were turned. They do not have any common courtesy, compassion, remorse, conscience or any other traits usually associated with being called a human being.
They are born and bread and taught from birth to make their living by lawless means, stealing, lying and hustling, they know no other way. Let them be travellers and travel, far, far, away…..

I do not understand why there is so much debate about this situation.
1 – The people at Dale Farm should no longer be allowed to be called travellers, they have been settled for 10 years hence they are now just pikeys.
2 – Why do you want to save the ‘community’? they use all of our services (schools, doll office, water etc etc) and pay nothing back into the system. That doesn’t sound like a ‘community’
3 – They are not english, no matter what people say about our ‘scummy’ areas, they are still english and have more right to destroy our country than irish immigrants.
4 – If the coucil payed them money to leave or let them stay what message are we sending out to the rest of the country and world, that we allow the law to be broken and then will do nothing about it.
I’m a working class guy, have been always, why should i have to work, pay 20% of my earned money straight away to taxes and then watch as these guys get offered £60,000 each to leave an illegal site?
