We recently spent some time investigating the best animal attack protection. Animals call much harm and injury to people, including attacks from animals like dogs, big cats and even sharks. One of our passions is bespoke animal attack protection, to protect from a range of animal attacks. We work with a number of worldwide manufacturing partners who provide high quality animal attack protection products.
Carnivore Resistant Jackets
Carnivore and animal resistant jackets and armour are something which potentially can benefit many thousands if not millions of people. Protective jackets/armour for forest rangers and animal workers or even divers, who are protecting tigers, coming into contact with sharks, and other canivorous animals in places like a reserves in India, or a beach in South Africa. Life saving armour equipment such as animal attack jackets, gives hope that injuries can be reduced and lives saved.
Protective armour for Forest Rangers
Tigers and leopards are just one of hazards for rangers, who are dispatched at short notice to rescue animals, generally big cats, who stray into villages and are under danger. Generally they are sedated with a dart, and removed to inside the forest where they can be released. Rangers are sometimes faced with hostile action from villagers and poachers. They work to reduce poaching and deaths of tigers, leopards, and other endangered animals. There is a definite risk to the survival of some big cat species both in India and worldwide, and people who work to protect animals often need protection, as animals, especially wild animals, can be a serious threat.
Providing a fit for purpose effective solution is a task which requires much thought and research. Large cats have a powerful bite, and sharp claws to slash. Protective jackets to protect against this kind of threat need to be strong enough to resist these kind of attacks.
Animal Attack Armour Solutions
Hard armour plates and or chain-mail is the obvious solution, something highly puncture, bite, and slash resistant. Something which could spread the power of a powreful bite. Cost needs to be kept at a reasonable level, and the final solution had to provide effective protection can come within a reasonable cost. A full body chain-mail with meant that the only cost effective way on this project to proceed with chain mail would be to use a reputable manufacturer to supply a chain-mail suit. This would provide excellent slash resistance from claws, but with bites there would be puncture wounds hard armour is needed. Chainmail provides some bite resistance, but the secret is to use strong chain-mail, even two layers along with at least 4 inches of shock absorbing padding. A helmet which also covers the neck, and addition hard armour pads are desirable. Total cost less than £800 per unit at current market prices.
It is essential that a fit for purpose solution is provided when undertaking any custom project, and the end user, rangers, divers or adventurers are happy with the level and comfort of protection offered. Armour to protect against animals is really intended to only be used for short periods of time whilst sedating the tigers/leopard, or going on a dive..
Nothing can really be described as being animal proof, but having the best possible protection from bites and slashes is possible to control certain risks.. Armour gives the wearer additional confidence to carry out their duties, knowing additional protection is available.
Highly protective materials need to be used to make animal proof Armour/Jackets, which provide protection against bites, claws, and blunt trauma inflicted by Tigers, leopards and other animals.
Research into animal attack protection
Good padding and stab/puncture/bite resistant properties are needed in a good animal attack protection solution. Jackets/armour protection giving the highest possible levels of stab bite and puncture/cut/bite resistance, and good blunt trauma protection can be achieved in a number of ways.
KR2/SP2 or KR1/SP1 stab protection levels can be used to ascertain if something is resistant to stabbing and spiking, and materials used to achieve ballistic levels HG1 and HG2 can provide energy absorbing protection. After careful research and consulting with others in the body armour industry, a chain-mail option is considered to the lowest cost solution, with ballistic type full body armour being the ideal option., Advanced polycarbonate hard armour solutions were very costly when custom made. Chain which could perform the task, with some additional plating.
It was already known that chain-mail is used to provide protection from sharks, and is often complimented by hard armour plates to provide additional protection for divers, and this technology can also be used to protect from land based animals. Armour can made which is un-certified but fit for purpose, we have to remember that there is not tiger test, but by using the right design experts can predict protection offered against a tiger, and also conduct in-house testing to confirm protection offered.
Designs for animal attack armour
Due to nature of construction and materials used, possible solutions mean that designs for the jackets/armour sometimes also give ballistic protection. This is not a requirement, but protection from shooting at some animal workers like rangers, from poachers, Is a potential additional benefit of animal resistant armour. Jackets/armour armour are now being designed and engineered to provide best possible protection, with specific emphasis on stab and slash resistance to animal attacks. A list of requirements should be agreed with the manufacturer when buying bespoke armour. For example below shows the requirements for a carnivore resistant jacket.
1 – Key areas such as the neck, upper arms, shoulders, throat and torso protected.
2 – Fit for purpose upper arm protection, to wrap around the upper arm, ensuring full protection.
3 – Easy to take on/off, weight a reasonable 8kg for short duration wear.
4 – A protective helmet can fit on head when wearing armour.
5 – Collar and throat protection perfected to give best coverage, and. Protection area under the arm raised up to cover more of the torso.
7 – Jackets offer the movement to shoot and use rifle whilst wearing the armour.
A hard Armour or highly slash and bite resistant jacket solution was needed to give high protection for short periods of time from tigers and leopard
Steel – composite material – titanium or aluminum plate – chainmail
The best solution may be a upper torso armour made using metal such as steel, titanium, or other hardened plating/composite material/ and or chain-mail with extensive suitable padding. Chain-mail and modern composite materials provide excellent slash protection, and bite resistance, which can be re-enforced with plates. Plate only armour is also a good solution. Padding under the armour provides valuable blunt trauma protection and further adds to the bite and slash protection.
Armour was perfected during the medieval period throughout Europe, and made obsolete by guns. For tigers and leopards it provides an ideal solution and designs were obtained to re-produce this kind of upper body armour. Any finished products can be any colour, any shiny metal would certainly not be appropriate, as would cause distress to animals.
Bespoke upper body protection made using suitable metal or composite material. medium weighted composite materials and effective padding offer the ideal solution to provide the best protection. Additional chain mail/armour hybrid armour, possibly composite, ceramic, thick armoured polycarbonate full upper body protection is available, a range of options are available including advanced chain-mail with hard plating in key areas.
